A federal judge on Thursday declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional and said she will issue an order to stop the government from enforcing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy nationwide.
U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips said the ban violates the First and Fifth Amendment rights of gays and lesbians. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” prohibits the military from asking about the sexual orientation of service members but requires discharge of those who acknowledge being gay or are discovered engaging in homosexual activity, even in the privacy of their own homes off base.
In her ruling, Phillips said the policy doesn’t help military readiness and instead has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services.

Just the other day, whilst I was listening to my new favorite song “I Like That” by the Static Revengers on my iPhone, it occurred to me that Apple has dabbled in most forms of electronic media, but has yet done much of anything with social networking. That has changed.
Today an update to iTunes and the iPhone was released that paved the way for Apple “change everything…again.” It’s called Ping, and it utilizes some functionality of Apple’s recent acquisition, Lala.com. It basically operates like Facebook in many ways, only with a focus on music. For example, any music you buy, like, review, or comment on will show up in your recent activity.
It’s really a great start, but there are a few things I would add. First, the ability to add friends, or “follow” them, is limited to typing in their e-mail address or name. It works, but not as well as many sites who utilize Facebook or Twitter Connect to find the friends you already have. I have no interest in going through all 1500 of my friends to figure out who I want to add, then figure out if they have an email address. I also feel like the ability to add what song you are currently listening to into your feed from your iPhone screen. That may come with future updates, however.
Also included in the new update was a new app called Game Center, though I haven’t had a chance to really look at that yet.

In case the hunks and snanks on Jersey Shore distracted you, MTV or Music Television, the Cable TV network that at one time had a profound impact on popular culture and music isn’t playing many music videos these days.
In the 1980s, their 24 hour music video programming led to the rise of mega-celebrities like Madonna and Michael Jackson and comedians like Weird Al Yankovic, both Julie Browns, the regular funny one and the “downtown” one with the exaggerated British accent.
I forget which one was the funny one.
With the rise in popularity of reality TV shows, the cable network giant decided to move in the direction of youth oriented programming, and moving much of the music oriented content to other channels like VH1.
This week the music giant failed to reach an agreement with Universal Music Group and Vevo, another music video site.
So one of the biggest icons in music today wont or can’t show the biggest name in music to come in a long time, Lady Gaga. None of MTV’s Internet properties will be able to show videos from UMG’s artists, which includes the Great Costumed One.
